A tale of the amazing human spirit, Gandhigiri is a poignant and powerful story about how one man came to leave his people and all he knew, in search of peace.Brought up in a Hindu tradition, with strong values on caste and class, young Hari Kumar (Rajesh Khanna) is brought up to believe that his destiny is to become a successful lawyer or if he must work for someone else then as an overworked servant. Life has little meaning outside the confines of family honour and tradition. That changes when after years at university he comes home for the first time only to find himself ostracised by his parents who feel humbled by their lack of money. Hari chooses not to visit his parents again and takes up a job as a postman. To make ends meet he works at night as a security guard for his old school. Elated with the newfound freedom of choice, Hari is now free to forge his own destiny. Hari's life changes dramatically one day when he sees an advertisement for the Gandhigiri competition wherein boys are encouraged to leave their homes with nothing but their lungis (dhoti) and all they can carry on their heads, just to be able to compete against girls who do not have this limitation. It is said that the winner of the competition is the one who finishes first with least amount of money spent or with some kind of profit made. Hari is inspired by this opportunity and makes up his mind to compete in the competition. The only problem is that he does not have any lungi or head gear. He approaches his best friend Sandeep (Kulbhushan Kharbanda), who has just returned from his studies in the United States, with the idea of making one at home. Sandeep shares Hari's excitement and together they make a lungi which is slightly impractical for winning Gandhigiri, but acceptable enough to get him through the competition. Hari Kumar enters Gandhigiri with no money or food but one thing on his mind - to win. He pushes himself to his limits, working day and night. With no sleep until he can run on nothing but adrenaline, Hari battles it out with girls if not for pride, then at least to prove that the Hindu tradition of his upbringing is not the only way. Without any food or rest for days, Hari does not stop. He keeps going. Eventually he makes it to the final round of competition but barely. The first prize is a swimming pool which he can barely afford and thus loses out on this prize as well. Still determined to win though, Hari refuses to accept defeat - even after being given a loan by his teacher who tells him that money is not everything in life. After acquiring some more money, Hari decides to take part in the second round of competition wherein he wins a scooter. With the amount of money he has left, Hari buys himself an airplane ticket to far away lands and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. On his trip, Hari is at first taken aback by how people are not as free or as happy as he had thought they would be. He witnesses people who are burdened with their own forms of tradition and prejudice. He is shocked to see that there are people out there who think castes are relevant even in modern times. cfa1e77820
